Adolescence is not a problem to be solved, it’s a passage to be supported.

Teen Therapy in Carlsbad, CA

Real Support in a Low-Pressure Setting

Support for teens who feel overwhelmed and the parents who care deeply

Being a teen today is a lot. Between school stress, social dynamics, family stuff, and the constant noise of digital life, it’s easy to look “fine” while feeling anxious, shut down, or constantly on edge inside.

If you’re a parent, it can be heartbreaking and confusing to watch your teen struggle, especially when they can’t explain what’s wrong or they pull away when you try to help. Therapy can offer your teen a steady, low-pressure place to sort through what’s going on, feel more like themselves again, and build real skills for handling life.

This isn’t about “fixing” your teen. It’s about helping them feel more grounded, clear, and confident in who they are.

What I can help with

I work with teens (ages 12 and up) who are navigating:

  • Teen anxiety, panic, or feeling constantly on edge
  • School stress, burnout, and pressure to get it “right”
  • Social anxiety, friendship shifts, and peer pressure
  • Perfectionism, people-pleasing, or fear of failure
  • Low self-esteem, confidence issues, or identity uncertainty
  • Big emotions (irritability, shutdown, mood swings) that feel hard to manage
  • Feeling fine on the outside, but overwhelmed inside
  • Trauma, grief, or unresolved stress from past experiences

Whether something changed recently or it’s been building for a while, therapy can help your teen feel more steady, confident, and connected. And if your teen’s struggle is hard to put into words, that counts too. We can start there.

How I Work With Teens

Therapy should not feel like another class, lecture, or performance.

In my psychotherapy practice in Carlsbad, the goal is for your teen to feel comfortable enough to actually talk and supported enough to make real change. My style is warm, direct, and genuinely engaged. I can be light and playful when it helps your teen open up, and serious when it matters. Many teens tell me it feels surprisingly easy to talk in session, even if they were unsure at first.

Sessions have enough structure to feel supportive, but not so much that your teen feels judged or analyzed. We move at a pace that feels doable, and I tailor therapy to your teen’s personality, needs, and goals.

Depending on what your teen is dealing with, I may integrate:

  • CBT and DBT skills for teens for emotion regulation, coping tools, communication, and real-life problem solving.
  • EMDR and Brainspotting for teens to support nervous system regulation, trauma recovery, and stuck anxiety responses
  • Schema Therapy to shift patterns like perfectionism, people-pleasing, harsh self-criticism, and “not good enough” beliefs (for example)

Some teens come in for therapy for anxiety, social concerns, or school stress and want practical tools right away. Others need a steady space to sort through friendships, self-esteem, family stress, or big emotions. Either way, this is not one-size-fits-all teen counseling. We adjust as we go, based on what’s helping.

Teen Therapist in Carlsbad: Why Teens Often Click with me

A lot of this comes down to experience, personality, and a long history with teens.

I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and I focus my practice on individual therapy for teens and adults.

Experience with teens (for decades)

  • 30 years working professionally with kids and teens in real-life settings
  • School-based mental health therapist during the pandemic
  • 20 years as a professional photographer, including senior portraits, which sharpened how I notice emotion and unspoken dynamics

What teens often say about therapy with me

  • I’m authentic and real (not overly formal)
  • Teens often describe me as safe and easy to talk to
  • I can be light and funny when it helps, and serious when it needs to be
  • I’m good at putting words to what they feel, especially with teen anxiety, school stress, social anxiety, and self-esteem

My unique perspectives

  • I’m also a parent raising two teens, and I have a college-aged child (currently out of state), so I understand the pace, pressure, and emotions families are navigating
  • My kids are all athletes and academically focused, so I’m familiar with the time demands, performance pressure, and identity stress that can come with competitive sports, clubs, and school.
  • My dad ran personal growth seminars, and I grew up around teen-focused work in a way that was genuinely formative. I had early exposure to teens showing up in groups, telling the truth about what they were going through, and trying to figure themselves out. That shaped my respect for how much teens carry, and what helps them actually open up

A trust signal

  • Many teens end up referring friends or family members, and I take that as a meaningful sign that they felt understood and helped
  • Some former teen clients reach out later from college to share positive updates or gratitude. I never ask for this, but I truly value it

I offer local support

  • I offer in-person teen therapy in Carlsbad (92008). My office is near El Camino Real and Faraday Ave. I support families across North County, including Carlsbad, Encinitas, La Costa, and San Marcos
  • Families often choose my office because it’s convenient for students connected with nearby schools, including:
High schools: Carlsbad High, Sage Creek High, La Costa Canyon High, Canyon Crest Academy, San Dieguito Academy, Torrey Pines High, San Marcos High, Mission Hills High
Middle + private: Valley Middle, Calavera Hills Middle, Pacific Ridge, Army and Navy Academy, Pacific Academy (Encinitas), Cathedral Catholic.

A Note for Parents:

In my experience, teens do best in therapy when they feel ownership of the process. That means I do not provide regular session updates to parents. At the same time, confidentiality is always held within legal and safety limits, and I will communicate with parents when clinically necessary. I often encourage teens to invite a parent into a session occasionally for a brief check-in. These sessions help us get on the same page about support at home while keeping therapy a space where your teen can speak openly.

Also, if your teen is struggling, you are carrying a lot too. I strongly encourage parents to have their own support during this season. If you already have a therapist, great. If you don’t, I’m happy to help. I can refer you to high-quality, trusted therapists in the area who work with parents, anxiety, stress, and family dynamics. Many parents find that having their own space to process, regulate, and get perspective helps them feel steadier and more effective at home.

Let’s Get Started

If your teen is struggling, or you’re not sure what kind of support would help, I’d love to connect. I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation so you can ask questions, get a feel for my style, and we can both see whether it’s the right fit. Parents are welcome to call on their own, or we can include your teen if that feels best.

The effects of the pandemic on teen mental health didn’t end with lockdowns. Studies show many adolescents are still experiencing increased anxiety, depression, and emotional dysregulation as they adjust to a “new normal."
